Be VERY patient.  Other people won't, and they will knock themselves out.  Then take advantage when you have the best hand, and later on, when you sense weakness.

While I don't play many SNGs, I know quite a few players who so, including a number for whom it's their main type of play.  The preponderant advice is to play solid early on while the first few people get knocked out.  Accumulate some chips when you get good hands, but emphasize survival.  Then, when you're down to five or six players, your odds of cashing are pretty good provided your stack isn't too small.  At that point, it's likely some people will tighten up in an effort to cash.  If you can recognize which ones are doing so, you can exploit that by, bor example, being more aggressive in stealing their blinds.

the only effective strategy that i know is you must be very lucky in order to win and nothing beats luck.

I don't know about that...I play a lot of SnG's, and have had more than a little success at them.

Early on, I will play very conservatively, letting people cut their own throats (it's inevitable), gradually getting more aggressive as they start dropping out.

By no means do I consider myself an expert poker player, but I've finished in the money or won far too many SnG's to attribute any of it to luck.  Patience is the name of the game, IMHO.

I'm of the opinion you should play aggressive early on in SnG's. To many times I have seen people start conservatively and be forced into a bad decision by the quickness of the blinds. So I tend to isolate strong hands especially in SnG's with a Buyin of less than $10 as the players are often reasonably unskilled and tend to fall in love with A or K high, and will often call when you move all in with QQ while holding only 1 over card.

I play very tight and aggressive with a lot of patience.  Most players will manage to knock themselves before they even reach level 4 of blinds.  Stick to playing your positions strong hands on button, small blind, and big blind.  I never recommend playing these loose passive or loose aggresive unless you are fortunate to catch a hand in the BB with no raises preflop.

Most people here seem to have the formula. Tight aggrssive early and loose and aggressive late seems to work best for me. When there 3 players or less bluff alot.

Sit and goes are my favorite place to play, I rarley finish out of the money.
The way to play them is to be very tight and very aggressive. people in low limit sit and go's (50 and under) will make horrible calls. Only play premium hands AA, KK, AK, maybe limp in with suited connectors 10 and above. When you limp in with crap you will get beat most of the time and loose chips little by little when you could be using them on hands that will produce possitive results. Patience is a virtue.

Actually I agree with peacebrother to a point.  Most low limit sng's are played the same as FreeRolls.... a lot of players play the bingo game at the beginning so only play premium hands.  If you sit back you will see the first 2-3 people go out very fast.  Then you can get down to your game.

I play sng's a lot at Absolute and I too very rarely finish out of the money.  When it gets down to the last 4 people that's when the "game" really begins and you best have a lot of patience to get into the top 3.

I,m vary wary now of S&G,s !! After i was in a forum and a player asked another player wanted to go join him, and what his MSN was. I fear 3-4 players might do this.!! If you see any suspicious play, contact support to watch, take table shots, and report these cheaters. !!!!!

You got a point there RG. Stuoid me never really thought of people doing this. Guess my results are well enough not to think about it.  I like the 10 persons better anyway, and if you play tight it probably wont matter if someones cheating, only matter if you get cards. Definitely something to think about though.

Yep you do have a point.  I really don't have any problems like that at Absolute where I play sngs but I don't think it could be kept up for long without people noticing.

i agree that the most important thing is all about waitin but watching who you are playing...alot of people on line do not watch people they play cards but you have to watch patterns do they bet then fold only play monsters or always playing bs....playing tight and learning early will make you be ther in the end
