I hate them both with a passion.  I usually just call the preflop without raising it.  I can never seem to win with either of them.  Any suggestions?!

Thanks!!

Depends on if you are playing no limit or fixed limit.

No limit (tourneys), I will raise and hope for rags to flop.  Then I blast the pot with a large bet.  Since I already showed strength pre-flop, they shouldn't be calling unless they too have a high pocket pair or they tripped up on the flop.  If a flush draw hits on the flop, I will bet modestly, but if they call, I back off.  When aces, kings, or queens flop, you should fold since you are something like a 22-1 dog to hit a 3rd J or T.

Fixed limit:  I play them very cautiously because it is often cheap for an opponent to call you all the way to the river with AK, AQ, or even KQ.

I'd add that while guidelines like gmroz laid out van be very useful, they are only guidelines, which means you have to be aware when situations areise that are better addressed by taking other actions.  For instance, you sometimes need to push even though one or more overcards have flopped.

I hate it when I get pocket J's and 10's.
But I will usually go aggressive when I get them to try to cut down the #  of players to see the flop.

Unfortunately I have seen you play and if you had ppJ or pp10 that would be a good hand for you.  I have seen you go in so many times with K6 os K2os... well in otherwords just about anything.  So when you get ppJ or pp10... quit going all in and wait for a flop to see if they are worth playing.

pocket j's and 10's are both wonderful hands. not only do they have almost a 75% chance of busting big slick (a hand that breeds overconfidence) but they also kill other players who hold paint (face cards) chances of hitting straights. the trick for me is to play them like as a base calling hand. when you triple up, look at the board. call the small and medium bets and once the round is over you have a good idea of who has the flush draws, two pairs and whatnot.

Where did you get your math from. It is far less than 75%. In fact, If all the cards are live, JJ is only a slight favorite over AK, AQ, KQ. Its more of a coinflip situation as long as the cards are live. No hand is a 75% favorite over any other hand preflop, especially when the other hand is 2 overcards.

JJ is my favorite hand, possibly because so many people dislike them. I do play them aggressively...a big raise preflop, and often a push after the flop if no overcards are there. However, if there are overcards, you DO have to back down. A continuation bet maybe after the flop...but if you're called, back off, and you have to be able to lay them down.

i have to say that again with a hand like this table position will mean everything.  if in early position you may want to just call the blinds as to see what the rest of the table is doing.  if you get raised then you have to believe someone else is sitting with two overs such as kQ.  again you should call the blind hoping to hit one of your cards, but be cautios.  if a k or a q or an Ace don't come out, you may have the best hand.  pay attention to betting patterns and don't be afraid to reraise if the higher cards don't come out.

Having JJ or pocket 10 scares me though because if you raise you would most likely get all the AK or AJ pockets pairs to stay in then you have a lesser change of catching antoher J than they have with catching a higher card AK, how would you go about that?

Yea,
J J and 10 10 are hard hands to lay down without losing a lot of money. i find the best way to play is to raise 3 times the BB and try to get an idea of other peoples hands. then if you see  an over card on the flop odds are you should fold right there and not gamble that you have the better hand. depending on your chip stack it is sometimes the best idea just to go all in and hope someone called with a pocket pair smaller than yours.

If u are patient and just call and see the flop, then amke a set or full house, slow play, if not get away from the hand.
