I don't recommend anyone playing for a living but certainly there will be a few players that can make it. It takes years of play, which might be shortened by playing online, to develop card sense. Just because you are doing well at the low limit games and have steadily moved up doesn't necessary mean that you can play live. I recommend many many trips to the local casino or Vegas to get a sense of how your play stacks up. What you might discover is that yes you do have the necessary skills, more likely you'll discover your lacking in many areas.  Never stop working on your game. Learn to play different styles and different games. Good luck.

The one thing you are overlooking in your post is the people that play online for a living.Live play is much different in many ways but I dont think you need to learn to play live to do it for a living.

Post URL Probably 0.000001% of us will play for a living Posted: Fri Jun 02, 2006 5:12 pm

I hate to say it but very few poker players will play for a living, though it is very fun and enjoyable in many respects. Ive only been playing online and it can be so hard to read pple when your online. Offline reading can help alot more and thats what I lack.

I think the biggest factors in becoming a poker player for a living is reading well. If you can read well you can bluff well, thus winning more hands then u should be allowed, giving you the edge, which is what u need to win in poker.

From there, its all downhill, but I dont read quite well....

That would be a dream job, but yeah, the amount actually doing it would have to be pretty low.  Plus all those risks you'd have to take....

online poker is defenetly not for going to make a living out of it....
go live casinos and tournaments of all kinds if you planning on doing poker for your money.... just an advice

Post URL onlne vs. live Posted: Thu Sep 21, 2006 7:56 pm

I believe there are many more players that could make a living online vs. live play.  The big diffence is tells and although there are tells in online they are more subtle than live play to an experienced player.

i will agree live play is much different.  but i found my play work in live play better then online.  two weeks ago i took down a 5000 tourney in AC.  i will admit there was only locals and no pros but it was sure nice to feel on top.

I personally think it is a bad idea, especially if you are playing online, where your luck can change in a heartbeat and then you will be hurting if you start losing money.  I say its best to just go out and get a job and play poker for fun.  I seem to do better when I don't feel as much pressure to win, and when your playing for a living there is a lot more pressure to win.

Post URL playing full time Posted: Fri Nov 03, 2006 4:15 pm

I think playing full time would be very interesting considering the characters around the tables.  Often with independent self-sufficiency comes eccentric behavior and the tables are full of rather eccentric individuals.  All I need is a stake…..anyone out there willing to help?

I wouldn,t want to even attempt to play for a living. It already takes up too much of my time. It can be very boring to play for a living. Playing for long periods at a stretch, folding bad cards for hours.

truushot and all,

hi and thanks for the post.

been playing on line for a couple

of years now.  this jan. will be going to

vegas to play some poker. ..... to get

my feet wet.  off the top of my head it sure

looks like it will be dificult to translate any online

success i may have had into live/in person success.

first, the overhead: air, hotel and especially the big rake.

also, the bigger stakes will be intimidating.......

as well as the players, i`m sure.

however looking forward to it and who knows-

may even come out a little ahead to help pay

for our vacation.

best to all,

donvic
